Jah Shaka and Friends / Breakage - 'Rise'

Massive thanks to the Legolegz for sending me this superb sample moment from Breakage's 'Rise' released in 2005 on the now de-funked (it should be spelt like that) Bassbin Records. 'Kingdom rise and kingdom fall'.

Now it's time for following the breadcrumb trail and listening to this guy's back catalogue...

Here's the tune from which the first tune from that LP is taken. If you don't already have it, 'This Too Shall Pass' by Breakage is a huge DnB album and you should get hold of it if you haven't done already. If you have, dig it out again. You know you love it. Look yuuut man, jah jah is caaa-aaa-miiiiiiiin

Alexander Nut - Rinse FM - Saturday Afternoon Sessions

Just discovered this guy's Saturday show on Rinse FM. A great mix of funk, electronica, funky house and leftfield beats. If you're a fan of Giles Peterson's selections and range of musical tempos, you'll probably want to take a listen to Alexander Nut too. Also seems to be an excellent scratch DJ from what I can hear on this week's show. There are previous weeks' shows for download now on the Rinse FM website.

"Alexander Nut

Saturdays: 12:00 – 14:00 GMT

As co-head of acclaimed London label Eglo, and long-running host of balmy Saturday afternoon sessions on Rinse FM, Alexander Nut has become famed for his wide ranging approach to selection. The sounds covered both by his label and his show are defiantly unhindered by genre, searching instead for a common atmosphere to bind the music together. 「I'm a vibes person,」 he agrees. 「I don't really plan things too much, I always just go off the vibe of what's going on.」

That attitude extends to his selection for his shows on Rinse. 「Saturday is always a bit calming – it's always daylight, it's always the weekend. I can still go dark and deep and stuff like that, but I like to reflect my surroundings – even the seasons.」 So depending on the day you catch him, you're likely to encounter anything from deep house, soul and funk to ruder, London-borne sounds like grime, garage and bass-driven UK house. It's an electrifying cocktail, heightened by the seemingly effortless way he's able to segue between disparate rhythms and moods.

Although it's become commonplace for DJs to mix across genres, when he first got involved with Rinse FM in 2007, Nut was one of a rare breed. 「At the time it wasn't really the done thing to be doing eclectic mixes,」 he explains, but goes on to cite his wide-ranging musical influences from childhood (「I was obsessed with Curtis Mayfield and Jimi Hendrix as a kid,」 he laughs) as teaching him to see beyond superficial boundaries. 「I think there's always been an underlying current or frequency to what I play. I generally don't seem to see the difference in what I play, it all means the same thing to me.」"

Rustie - Slasherr

Naibu - Broken Dreams - Horizons Music 2013

Plenty of traditional Asian musical influences on Naibu's new Drum and Bass long player. This is one of the stand-out tracks on the album for me:

Fracture @ ease up, Conne Island 24-11-2012

A great selection of some classic jungle, a brilliant remix of Clissold and plenty of half-time beats and analogue bass from long time drum and bass DJ Fracture.
